Locations & GLNs
How the app picks up your Shopify locations and reads each location's GLN from a Shopify metafield.
The app matches EDI messages to your Shopify locations (warehouses). For that it needs two things: your Shopify locations, and each one’s GLN (Global Location Number).
Locations
Section titled “Locations”The app picks up your active Shopify locations automatically every time it opens — no manual sync is needed. Under Settings → Locations & GLNs, you’ll see every location along with its GLN.
If you add, rename, or deactivate a location in Shopify, the app picks up the change automatically the next time it opens.
Setting a location’s GLN
Section titled “Setting a location’s GLN”A GLN is a 13-digit number that uniquely identifies a location worldwide. Trading partners address EDI messages using GLNs — the app uses them to match an incoming message to the right location.
The GLN isn’t managed inside the app itself, but through a Shopify metafield:
- Open Settings → Locations in Shopify (also linked from the Locations & GLNs page of the app’s settings).
- Open the location you want and enter the number in the GLN metafield.
- Save in Shopify. The app reads the value automatically the next time it displays it.
You’ll get the GLN from your trading partner or from your master data. Without a GLN on file, an incoming message can’t be matched to a location and ends up in error handling.
Don’t have a GLN yet?
Section titled “Don’t have a GLN yet?”A GLN isn’t a number you can pick yourself. It’s globally unique and registered through a provider such as GS1, which assigns it to your company. Without a real GLN, proper EDI exchange with your trading partners isn’t possible — partners address their messages using exactly this number.
GLNs are issued by the national GS1 member organisations; you can find the one responsible for your country through the GS1 directory.
Only one location? Automatic assignment
Section titled “Only one location? Automatic assignment”If your shop has exactly one location, the app assigns incoming DESADV despatch advices to it automatically — even without a matching GLN. The message shows this as an override, which you can change to a different location there if needed.
Checking the format
Section titled “Checking the format”A GLN is exactly 13 digits (including the check digit). If the metafield contains spaces or letters, the app can’t match incoming messages to that location.
Next step
Section titled “Next step”Setup is now complete. For an overview of the message types the app processes, see Message types.
